KUALA LUMPUR: A union stealing vehicle exhaust systems has been arrested with the arrest of eight men in the Klang Valley.
Police also seized various car parts, including exhausts, valued at RM 119,310.
Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Anuar Omar said he initially arrested six men aged 22 to 33 in Taman Desa between noon and 3 p.m. on May 21.
âTwo of those arrested had criminal records, including drug-related offenses.
“We also seized various items, including a truck used for thefts, car keys and six power saws,” he told reporters at Brickfields Police Headquarters yesterday.
Further investigations led police to two more men in Batu and Klang caves, he added.
âWe seized around 30 exhaust pipes and a Toyota Hilux in Klang. We found out that the union was going to steal the exhaust system and export it to Japan and Germany, âhe said.
A valuable part of a vehicle’s exhaust system is the catalytic converter, which is located between the engine and the muffler, usually on the passenger side.
A catalytic converter contains precious metals such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium, which can be extracted from used converters.
Experienced thieves can reach under the car and cut off the catalytic converter or the entire exhaust system with an electric saw.
