Mechanic Falls checking possible savings on water testing and street lights

MECHANICAL FALLS – City councilors on Monday evening authorized chief executive Vic Hodgkins to consider saving money by testing groundwater at the landfill and converting streetlights to LEDs.

Hodgkins said the current three-year contract for water testing is $ 21,000, compared to the company’s proposal for the next three years, starting in 20221, for $ 49,600.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection requires testing at the landfill, which is behind the transfer station at 41 Austin Road.

Hodgkins said he would like to research other options, either with the same company or with another, if necessary.

He will also find out if it would be more cost effective for Central Maine Power to replace the roughly 100 street lights with LEDs for free if the city accepts a 15-year contract, or uses RealTerm Energy, which specializes in converting municipal street lights with energy efficient ones to energy efficient ones. energy.

In other areas, the council will hold a special session with Planning Council at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, November 22, to discuss and possibly decide on the modification of marijuana ordinances and the passage of the zoning ordinances of the solar farms.

The Planning Council has developed solar farm ordinances to govern sizes and locations since the council voted a six-month moratorium on the development of alternative energy facilities in August.

The town planning council will also examine the possibility of separating the recycling ordinance from the scrapping ordinance.

Dave Griffiths has been appointed to planning council and Janie Ferri has been welcomed as city clerk, succeeding Julie Ward who resigned last month.
