SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Aidan McCarthywho won the Big West Conference title in the men’s 800 meters on Saturday, was selected as student-athlete of the week by Mechanics Bank Cal Poly.
McCarthy, a redshirt freshman, clocked the fifth-fastest time in school history (1 minute, 49.38) to bring home Cal Poly’s third Big West title in the 800 m masculine, and the first since Bobby Poynter in 2019.
“It’s the fastest 800-meter time we’ve had since 2013,” the acting athletics director said. Chris Baptista said Saturday. “He has talent and he will have a very good future.”
McCarthy set the fastest time in the preliminaries on Friday and came back the next day and beat his previous personal best by more than a second and a half. Prior to the conference championships, McCarthy had run the 800 only one other time this season.
McCarthy, a graduate of Amador Valley High in Pleasanton, hopes to earn a spot in the May 25-28 NCAA West preliminary rounds at the University of Arkansas when the field is announced at 10 a.m. Thursday. The top 48 individual marks and the top 24 relay times west of the Mississippi receive a berth in the preliminary rounds.
