SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After going a perfect 4-0 to help Cal Poly’s beach volleyball team win their third straight Big West Championship and earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament, student graduate Addison Hermstad and freshman Peyton Dueck were named this week’s AVCA National Pair of the Week and Mechanics Bank Student-Athletes of the Week.
Dueck and Hermstad played a crucial role in helping the Mustangs triple as Big West champions last weekend as Cal Poly hosted the Big West tournament at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex. Together in third place, they beat pairs CSUN, No. 11 Long Beach State and No. 9 Hawai’i twice to help Cal Poly to wins in all four games.
They are 21-5 as a duo this season, the team’s best winning percentage by a pair that has played at least 10 games together. At one point in the season, they won 10 straight games.
After winning the Big West Tournament, Cal Poly received the No. 12 seed in the 16-team NCAA Tournament. The Mustangs will face No. 5 seed Florida State on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. PT in the first round. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU and ESPN3.com.
Cal Poly is looking for its first-ever win against the Seminoles. In last year’s NCAA Tournament, the Mustangs beat Stanford to earn the program’s first win.
