Water rises near Abbotsford due to heavy rains

Chilliwack, it’s time to go home.

The British Columbia Ministry of Transportation has issued a warning for Highway 1 between Whatcom and Yale Road. Due to the heavy rains, the water rises rapidly east of Abbotsford. Although the highway is currently open for travel, it could close at any time this afternoon.

Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun said the Nooksack River south of the border is expected to flow into Abbotsford’s Sumas Prairie later Sunday, November 28. At least 100 millimeters of rain fell over the area, causing bottom water levels in the Sumas Lake area to rise three inches.

DriveBC has reported flood conditions, closures and travel advisories on Highway 1 through the Fraser Valley and Fraser Canyon. Route 1 is currently closed between Bridal Falls Road and Flood Road near Hope.

More soon.
