Curtis Jepson inquest: Yorkshire mechanic, 26, died in crash while testing mighty Ford Mustang

Curtis Jepson, 26, was killed after ‘accelerating hard’ on a wet road a short distance from the Doncaster garage where he worked and had just serviced the car.

A driver following him captured the entire collision on Balby Carr Bank on February 17 this year on his dash cam and described seeing the Mustang hit a sewage pumping station and an access bridge over the Junction 4 industrial area before coming to rest in the water-filled ditch. . Mr. Jepson died at the scene of a fractured skull.

The inquest at Doncaster Coroner’s Court was watched today by Curtis’ father, Paul Jepson, who said his son, who lives in Intake, ‘likes cars’ and they intend to open possibly a workshop together to restore classic models.

Mr Jepson added that Curtis ‘loved the thrill of a big engine’ and had owned powerful cars before, but were not reckless and respected vehicles. An autopsy found no alcohol or drugs in his system.

Evidence was also provided by Matthew Meads, the co-owner of RNA Diagnostics, where Curtis had worked for about six years.

According to Paul Jepson, Mr. Meads had said he was “frightened” by the power of the Mustang on several occasions because it belonged to a regular customer. He believed it may have been “set up” for racing, although police found no modifications or defects to the car when they inspected it.

Mr Meads said it was normal for staff to test cars they had just serviced, and around 5 p.m. the Mustang owner called the garage to say he had been alerted by the technology system of his vehicle that he had come to rest in the ditch.

Police forensic investigator Kieran O’Connor told the inquest that when dash cam footage and business park CCTV were reviewed Curtis was ‘driving normally’ on its journey up White Rose Way and onto Balby Carr Bank and was traveling at a similar speed to other traffic. He was then captured “accelerating hard” and the rear of the car slid, causing him to lose control.

The road was wet that day, but there was no ice, and police brake tests revealed that surface grip levels were normal. No defects were found on the road.

Mr. O’Connor added that the Mustang was a fairly new vehicle, in good condition and in good condition. He added it was impossible to say whether his stability controls had been disabled before the trip, but said it was “unlikely” given Mr Jepson’s attitude towards cars.

Mr O’Connor’s report concluded that environmental, weather and mechanical factors had been ruled out as contributing causes and that “driver’s actions” were the root cause.

Doncaster Deputy Coroner Simon Tait agreed Curtis had been ‘driving reasonably’ until he lost traction and recorded a death in a road accident.

Curtis is also survived by his mother, Marie, and his girlfriend Lauren Barker, an artist.

RNA Diagnostics said in a tribute: “Curtis, you will forever be in our hearts and will be missed beyond words. We are all truly heartbroken. Thank you all for your lovely comments and messages, they have truly brought us comfort. in what can only be described as our darkest hour. We will miss Curtis dearly. We are blessed to have spent six years with him and he will never be forgotten. These messages only reinforce how much he was loved and respected. Bless you Curtis, we are heartbroken but you leave us with so many fond memories.”
