Community to celebrate Gravette Day

GRAVETTE — The town of Gravette invites residents and visitors to gather to celebrate Gravette Day, the 129th anniversary of the founding of the town, on Saturday, August 13.

The Gravette Kiwanis Club will be holding its annual pancake breakfast in the Gravette High School cafeteria from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The all-you-can-eat menu includes pancakes, sausages, coffee, and orange juice and costs $5 per person. Children five and under can enjoy breakfast free of charge. Proceeds will go to Kiwanis scholarship and community service programs.

Gravette Day 5K, sponsored by Gravette Gym, will begin at 8 a.m. at Old Town Park. Registered participants can pick up their kits at the Gravette gymnasium starting Wednesday, August 10, between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., or at Old Town Park on the morning of the race. The first 72 participants will receive a Gravette Day 5K jersey. Water and first aid stations will be positioned along the course, and the GHS boys’ basketball team will attend the event. Rewards, including Grand Savings Bank gift cards, will be presented at 9 a.m. at the Old Town Park Pavilion. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Gravette Police Department Shop with a Cop program.

Visits to the Gravette Historical Museum will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. A car show will be held at the former Bus Barn property at the corner of Fourth Avenue SE and Charlotte Street SE. Registration begins at 10 a.m. Donations for admission will be accepted, the proceeds of which benefit the museum. Tickets for the museum raffle can be purchased in the museum annex between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., with the raffle taking place at 2:30 p.m. Prizes are $1 for one ticket, $5 for six tickets and $10 for 13 tickets. Winning ticket holders must be present at the draw in order to claim their prizes.

An art exhibition will take place at the Civic Center of La Gravette and is open to artists from the region. The show will start at 10 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. Categories include painting, drawing, and 3D art, as well as youth categories. Judging will take place at 10 a.m. and the winners will be announced during the opening ceremony. Peoples Choice voting will remain open throughout the show, with the winner announced at the close.

Longtime Hiwasse residents Robert and Geneva Hamilton will serve as grand marshals for this year’s “Celebrating the Community”-themed parade. The parade will begin at noon at the intersection of Charlotte Street SE and Highway 59 North, travel north to Main Street, east to Sixth Avenue SE, then south to Charlotte Street. Parade trophies will be awarded for the best use of the theme, the most festive and the best overall entry. Following the parade, Banque de la Gravette will offer two cash deposits on Principale Street, one for ages 5 to 13 and another for ages 14 and up.

Mayor Kurt Maddox will open the afternoon festivities at 1 p.m. on the main stage at Kindley Park. The winners of the 5K, parade and art exhibition will be announced and prizes will be awarded to the youngest and oldest participants, as well as the person who traveled the farthest to attend the Day of the Gravette. A dynamic rally will be animated by the cheerleaders of the GHS. The main stage is sponsored by Teasley Drug.

The Kindley Park Kidz Zone will open at 10 a.m. and close around 6 p.m. Food and merchandise vendors will be spread throughout the park. Gravette Day shirts are available for purchase at City Hall and the Gravette Public Library until business closes Friday, August 12. They can also be purchased at the gazebo in Kindley Park on Gravette Day. Youth XL — Adult XL shirts are $8 each and Adult 2XL — 3XL are $10 each.

Rackensak will take the stage from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Band members Vince Turner, James Miller and Kevin Bonner, from Gravette, will play a variety of music including blues, rock, country and pop.

Contests will begin at 3:30 p.m. and will include Pretty Baby, Tiny Tot, Little Miss Toddler, Mr. Tiny Tot, Tiny Tot, Little Mister, Little Miss Petite, Little Miss, Miss Tween and Miss Preteen. The Miss Teen Gravette Evening Dress Pageant and Coronation will be at 7:30 p.m. The Casual Dress portion of the Miss Gravette Pageant will be at 5:15 p.m. with Evening Dress and Coronation at 6:50 p.m. The pageants are sponsored by KKT Dynasty.
