Auto mechanics in Omaha run out of parts due to summer storms and supply chain crisis

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Another issue in the global supply chain crisis is impacting local auto dealers and mechanics, including those in the Omaha region.

Between this summer’s devastating storms and supply chain issues, repair shops may not have all the parts they need to fix your car.

“Our servants have had their ups and downs over the last few months when it comes to being able to get us parts or not getting us parts,” says Dirk Roeder, director of Great Plains Auto Body at the 42nd and at Leavenworth Street.

“Cars can be here for a week to repair normally, but it can take up to two months to repair because we don’t have the right part here.”

Over the past few months, working in the auto industry has been nothing short of frustrating.

“Sometimes we have to put the customer on hold and bring them back later once we know we have the parts in stock,” says Roeder.

However, Roeder says there are short-term solutions while they wait.

“If we can make the vehicle drivable, maybe it’s not perfect in sight because it’s an exterior part, but if it’s mechanically sound and safe, we try to do it for them so that they can come back later and have those parts put on them, ”he said.

But not everyone is so lucky.

“Some of our foreign and Asian cars are giving us problems as the cars have been here for a few months and we can’t get safety items like an airbag, so we can’t technically let this vehicle go because that wouldn’t be safe to drive even though it would be technically sound, ”Roeder said.

For those customers who are dealing with this, it can leave them without a car for weeks and cause a host of other issues.

“Some clients run out of what is called rental coverage on their policies because a lot of them only last around 28 to 30 days and therefore two months … so they have to start paying their own. rental car, ”says Roeder.

His store tries to obtain safe and certified used or aftermarket parts when they can and when different policies and customers allow.

But others may just need to be patient.

“Everything affects us. Thank goodness we didn’t have a big hailstorm in this area otherwise it would be really bad.
